The City of Canterbury-Bankstown has announced four shortlisted teams that will proceed to the second stage of a competition to design a community space in the centre of Bankstown in Sydney’s south-west.
More than 100 expressions of interest were received in the first stage of the competition to transform the Griffith Park Precinct. The four teams that will proceed are:
- Tonkin Zulaikha Greer, TCL and WSP
- ARM Architecture, JMD Design and WSP
- Sibling Architecture and Aspect Studios
- Collins and Turner, Jane Irwin Landscape Architecture and WSP
The shortlisted teams will be challenged to create innovative plans and proposals to maximize potential of Griffith Park.
The area includes the existing Griffith Park, a playground, the Bankstown Arts Centre, and a bowls club. The project will include designs for a new community centre, the surrounding landscape and the public domain.
Teams will be tasked to envision a precinct with a place-based identity that celebrates the unique and diverse character of the city, with an accessible, safe and sustainable design that suits the needs and interests of the community.
“When we spoke to our community in 2020, they loved the open green space, but wanted a stronger link to community needs, and to connect better with the surrounding businesses – we’re looking for a design solution that includes all those things,” said City of Canterbury-Bankstown mayor Bilal El-Hayek.
“We want to see innovative designs that make the most of the area and also celebrate our identity and character.”
The finalists’ designs will be assessed by a jury before going on public exhibition later in 2023.
The jury comprises Andy Sharp (director planning at CB City), Annabel Lahz (director of Lahznimmo Architects), Laura Harding (director of Hill Thalis Architecture and Urban Projects), Oi Choong (consultant landscape architect) and Simeon King (director Turf Design Studio).
The winning design expected to be announced in March 2024.
