UQ establishes architecture scholarship to support reconciliation

The University of Queensland (UQ), alongside architecture practice Buchan, has established a new architecture scholarship to support Indigenous students through their university degrees.

The Buchan Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Architecture Scholarship is the first of its kind offered by UQ, with inaugural placement set to commence in 2023. Similar scholarships are already offered at other Australian universities.

The three-year scholarship is designed to support students through their undergraduate studies, offering access to a diverse academic and professional network, and engagement in industry opportunities.

UQ vice-chancellor for Indigenous engagement professor Bronwyn Fredericks said education is a powerful tool with positive ripple effects for students, the community and society more broadly. “Until we close the gap in higher education participation and outcomes, the goals of reconciliation will remain elusive,” said Fredericks.

Buchan said the scholarship program was established as part of the practice’s Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP), designed to amend the underrepresentation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in built environment professions.

Buchan also engaged Wiradjuri woman Theresa Bower of Burrundi Design Studio to produce a collaborative artwork depicting the aspirations of the RAP to connect people, place and Country in the future.

Applications close on 27 February. Interested Indigenous students can apply through the UQ website.
