Victoria’s first vertical indoor sports centre underway

Major construction has begun on a $54.5 million multi-level sports facility in Melbourne.

Design by Co.Op Studio, the Fitzroy Gasworks Sports Centre will be Australia’s first multi-use vertical indoor sports centre.

The facility will cater to a range of local sporting clubs with four multipurpose highball courts, a multipurpose futsal court, a gymnasium, a cafe and lounge, a foyer and reception, community facilities and change rooms.

The centre is being built adjacent to Wurun Senior Campus, which was designed by Grimshaw and GHD Woodhead and completed in October 2022. It will integrate with the school’s two indoor facilities to create a six-court precinct outside school hours.

The sports centre is part of the redevelopment of the former Fitzroy Gasworks.

The project is funded by the Victorian government ($49.5 million) and Yarra City Council ($5 million).

Built Environs was appointed head contractor for the project in June 2022. The centre is anticipated for completion in mid-2024.
