Concept design unveiled for first stage of UNSW Canberra

The University of New South Wales has unveiled the draft concept design for the first stage of its Canberra City campus development.

Designed by Hassell, the first stage comprises two multi-storey buildings for teaching and research areas, retail, cultural and student-focused spaces, and facilities for new and existing industry partners.

The buildings will be located on the site of an existing car park at the corner of Constitution Avenue and Coranderrk Street in Parkes. The site is currently occupied by the Canberra Institute of Technology, which will transfer its students to a new purpose-built campus in Woden.

The design concept has been guided by Country, with the original shape of the land on the site to inform movement in and around the buildings.

The facades will respond to the solar conditions, and incorporate colours from First Nations palettes.

The buildings will be designed for adaptability, flexibility and agility to cater for the university’s immediate and long term needs.

The project will also aspire to several sustainability targets, including a five-star green star rating, 100 percent renewal energy onsite and offsite, and circular economy principles for design and construction, as well as campus resources and waste management.

The university is seeking feedback on the draft concept designs for stage one.

The project is the first of four stages to be built as part of the UNSW Canberra City masterplan designed by MGS Architects, Snøhetta and Turf Design Studio.

Construction on stage one is expected to begin in 2025 with the campus expected to open in 2027.
