Open for inspection: Residences on show for Open House Melbourne 2024

A Robin Boyd-designed house never before been seen by the public is among the many exceptional homes scheduled to welcome visitors during the 2024 Open House Melbourne Weekend on 27 and 28 July.

Wildwood House, completed in 1966, is one of the few remaining houses designed by Robin Boyd during his partnership with Frederick Romberg. Sited in the eastern Melbourne suburb of Vermont, it is one of the largest residential examples completed by the esteemed architect at the tail end of his career. During the Open House Melbourne weekend, the doors of this intriguing residence will be unlocked, providing attendees a glimpse inside the enigmatic home.

A well-rounded assortment of new and refurbished residences feature on the program, including Armadale House by Neeson Murcutt Neille; That Old Chestnut by Figr; Living Around a Courtyard by Rush Wright Associates; Northcote House by MA and Co Architects; Cairo Flats renovation by Agius Scorpo Architects; Wowowa Magic; Nightingale Preston by Nightingale Housing and Hello House by Oof Architecture.

Another residential highlight is a guided walking tour of four multi-residential projects in Fitzroy, all designed by Kerstin Thompson Architects (KTA). The tour will commence at Kerr Street Residences, then proceed to George Street Residences and Church on Napier, then concluding at Napier Street Housing.

Tania Davidge, the executive director and chief curator of Open House Melbourne, said that this year’s theme, Rediscover your City, is designed to encourage Victorians to get out and explore Melbourne through a new lens. “Open House Melbourne Weekend is a chance for the curious at heart and lovers of architecture to discover new places and spaces in their city, to re-examine what they have perhaps overlooked and reconnect with beloved favourites,” said Davidge.

The full program is now accessible on the Open House Melbourne website. Tickets will be released on 3 and 6 July.
