Each of the 10 finalists’ designs from the Propositions: 2023 Tapestry Design Prize for Architects (TDPA) are set to be exhibited in large-format sample for the first time in 2024.
The prize invites architects from around the world to design a tapestry for a hypothetical site, which in 2023 was the Bundanon Art Museum by Kerstin Thompson Architects.
Australian Tapestry Workshop (ATW) weavers Leonie Bessant, Chris Cochius, Amy Cornall, Saffron Gordon, Tim Gresham, Pamela Joyce, David Pearce, Emma Sulzer and Caroline Tully have individually created tapestry samples in response to a section of each finalist’s design that inspired or intrigued them. The resulting woven artworks celebrate the artistry and technical skills of weavers, as well as the creative and innovative vision of the participating architects.
The 2023 prize finalists were: Heliotope; Adjacency Studio; Yiling Shen and Yuchen Gao; Glenn Russell of 3RDRM; Ellen Kwek; Studio Orsi; Beth George and Emerald Wise; Tasmin Vivian-Williams and Tonielle Dempers; Malin Parkegren, and Multiplicity.
The Propositions suite of tapestries will be exhibited at the Australian Tapestry Workshop in Naarm/Melbourne between Thursday 14 March and Friday 24 May 2024 before touring to the Ararat Gallery Textile Art Museum Australia (TAMA).
ATW tapestries can be found displayed across Australia at the National Gallery of Australia, National Library, Sydney Opera House, Arts Centre Melbourne, Parliament House and the Australian War Memorial in Canberra. The tapestries also appear globally in ten Australian embassies worldwide.
