The Tasmanian government announced the scope of works for the $130 million redevelopment of the University of Tasmania Stadium in Launceston.
Initial designs by Populous and Philp Lighton Architect indicate the project will include two new stands: an eastern stand with new and more accessible spectator facilities, food and beverage outlets and amenities, and a stronger connection to the Inveresk precinct, the University of Tasmania and the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery; and a centre-west stand with new player change room facilities and amenities, corporate hospitality facilities and news and media broadcasting facilities.
“These upgrades of the UTAS stadium will not only improve the overall experience of players and attendees, it will deliver significant economic knock-on effects for the wider community here in Launceston and provide a state-of-the-art, accessible facility for entertainment, sporting and cultural gatherings,” Tasmanian Minister for Stadia and Events Nic Street.

Federal minister for regional development Catherine King added, “Today is an important step towards bringing this vision for urban renewal, civic pride and sporting success closer to reality.
“This investment is part of our government’s commitment to creating a sustainable investment framework for growing cities such as Launceston.”
The project is funded equally by the state and federal governments, each committing $65 million, and the City of Launceston will transfer ownership of the stadium.
Concept designs for the stadium redevelopment are due to be completed in early 2024, in preparation for the development application. The project is expected to be completed in 2027.
