Architects chosen for Perth Concert Hall redevelopment

With Architecture Studio and OMA have been appointed as lead architects for the redevelopment of the iconic late-20th-century Perth Concert Hall.

The $52.4 million project will aim to restore the heritage-listed concert hall’s architectural integrity and enhance its acoustics, already considered among the best in Australia, while the forecourts will be refurbished to suit festivals and other mass gatherings.

It will also deliver working spaces for the West Australian Symphony Orchestra, which will make the Perth Concert Hall its new home. There will be further improvements to disability access and water and energy saving initiatives.

With Architecture Studio is founded by Geoff Warn, who is a former government architect of Western Australia. OMA designed the redevelopment of WA Musuem alongside Hassell.

Perth Concert Hall, which opened in 1973, was designed by local firm Howlett and Bailey Architects. Its state heritage listing notes that it is a fine example of the late-20th-century stripped classical style “because of its expression of symmetrical composition, strong horizontal roof element and peristyle like colonnade. These attributes reinforce a sense of occasion appropriate for a modern, civic building.”

The development is being delivered as part of the Perth City deal. Works are expected to be completed by late 2024.

The 2020, the WA government committed $30 million towards the refurbishment of Perth concert hall as part of a $76 million package for the state’s arts and culture sector to help it recover from the economic impact of COVID-19.

WA minister for culture and the arts David Templeman said, “This announcement marks the start of design works to redevelop the Perth Concert Hall precinct.

“After nearly 50 years, the popular performance venue is in need of an extensive upgrade.”
