Designs have been released for a $24 million redevelopment of the Neutral Bay Public School campus, which proposes to increase its core facilities and outdoor play space.
A masterplan by Desinginc was submitted to North Sydney Council in July and includes designs for seven new high-tech learning spaces, a new library, canteen and staffroom, with the existing classrooms to be refurbished.
The school was established in 1886 and has been in continual use since its foundation. The campus is currently made up of heritage buildings from the colonial era as well as more recent additions.
Currently around half of the existing buildings are a mix of demountable and single storey structures, and the school is now struggling to accommodate the needs of its 900 students.
Designinc’s masterplan endeavours to replace all temporary facilities with a proposed three-storey facility designed to minimize the building footprint and maximize the retention of outdoor space. The classrooms are conceived as “flexible learning spaces” integrating technology into the design to “extend learning opportunities”.
Designinc said in its design objectives that it would integrate the new buildings into the heritage context and incorporate carefully considered retention and reuse of heritage buildings.
The two existing main buildings on campus would be upgraded to create new classrooms and after school care facilities.
The redevelopment will increase outdoor play space on the site following a finding that the current footprint of play space relative to number of students is less than half the recommended ratio suggested by the Department of Education.
If approved, construction on the Neutral Bay Public School campus is expected to begin early 2023.
