Melbourne TAFE undergoes $40m refurbishment

Melbourne Polytechnic’s Collingwood campus is undergoing a $40-million revitalization, designed by Tectura Architects.

The redevelopment will include the refurbishment and modernization of the existing multi-storey building, to include new teaching and learning spaces, collaboration and library spaces, and front-of-house and student services.

Upgrades to the precinct will also include the construction of an entirely new building and car park, ensuring Melbourne Polytechnic can deliver quality education services for the community and local industry.

Minister for Training and Skills Gayle Tierney said the project will give thousands of Victorians access to vocational education and security, securing more workers in priority industries.

“This transformation will revitalise skills-based education in Melbourne’s inner north and give thousands the support they need,” said Tierney.

Melbourne Polytechnic Chief Executive Officer Frances Coppolillo said the refurbishment will “breathe new life” into the tired campus. “It will provide much-needed future-focused education and training opportunities for the community and contribute to the vibrancy of the dynamic Collingwood precinct,” said Coppolillo.

The campus will offer courses in areas including technology, business, creative arts, and English as a Second Language (ESL), and free courses will be offered in areas including community services and cyber security.

Building work is expected to finish in late 2023, with the revitalized campus re-opening to students in early 2024.

The project is funded under the state government’s $220 million Building Better TAFEs Fund.
