City of Kingston Council in Melbourne’s south-east has appointed a principal consultant architect to lead the design of a new local aquatic and leisure centre.
Melbourne-based Co.Op Studio has been selected by council from a two-stage tender process and will lead the project from concept design phase through to detailed design and construction.
The new aquatic centre has been in the pipeline since 2020, since the closure of the Don Tatnell Leisure Centre due to major structural issues. The site, adjacent to Jack Grut Reserve on Governor Road, Mordialloc, was selected by council from 180 potential locations in May 2022.
Kingston Mayor Hadi Saab said securing the architects was a major milestone for what will be the “largest ever infrastructure project undertaken by Council”.
“The highly experienced Co.Op Studio team have a proven record of successfully working with the local community to deliver aquatic and leisure facility projects of this scale, which will enable us to keep the momentum going,” said Saab.
Co.Op also designed community projects including the Carnegie Memorial Swimming Pool, the Fitzroy Sports Centre, and Mildura Sports Precinct.
Council said the community will have the opportunity to provide feedback as the concept plan is developed, with the next state of community consultation expected to open around mid-2023.
The aquatic centre is slated to open early 2026.
