Social housing sites identified for inner-Melbourne

The Victorian government has announced two sites for building new social and affordable housing as part of its $5.3 billion Big Housing Build program.

To be built alongside existing public housing in Collingwood and South Yarra, the houses will join a number of other projects already underway in the program to deliver more than 12,000 new homes.

At Wellington Street in Collingwood, the project will deliver 150 homes.

Fieldwork has been appointed principal design consultant for the Collingwood project, while Hayball has been updating the masterplan for the project on Simmons Street in South Yarra, which will see 330 new homes delivered in stage one.

“Our Big Housing Build is not only providing a roof over the head of vulnerable Victorians who need it – it’s creating thousands of local jobs and supporting our state’s economic recovery,” said James Merlino on 27 June, his final day as acting premier.

Housing minister Richard Wynne added, “We’re getting on with building housing where it’s needed most in locations like Collingwood and South Yarra – close to school, employment opportunities, health services and transport.”

Projects already underway include Dunlop Street, Ascot Vale, Marhham Street, Ashburton, Victoria Street, Flemington, Tarakan Street, Heidelberg West and Bill Street, Hawthorn and Elizabeth Street, North Richmond.
