TON has been making bentwood furniture for 160 years

To mark their 160th birthday, TON has released the publication +- 160 Years, a creative culmination of TON’s history that documents the early innovation, design journey, materials and iconic products of the brand’s current and historic offerings.

Melding heritage and innovation, TON creates heirloom pieces that can be traded down through generations. TON furniture is characterized by its bent timber, sculpted in a quasi-elliptic fashion.

TON had its beginnings in 1861, when the Michael Thonet bent furniture plant was opened in Bystřice pod Hostýnem. The company managing the factory was made a national enterprise in 1946 and took the name TON (standing for Továrna Ohýbaného Nábytku – bent furniture factory) in 1953. That factory, which has been in continual operation since 1861, is the birthplace of the iconic Chair 18, Chair 14 and Chair 811.

The partnership between James Richardson Furniture (JRF) and TON was initiated in 1956, and JRF is the sole Australian stockist of the European furniture brand.

Of the 160-year milestone, Georgia Danos, creative and brand director of JRF, says, “As TON’s longest-standing client, JRF is proud to be a part of this incredible design journey and their legacy of quality and innovation.”
