Architect and urbanists awarded in Australia Day Honours 2022

Sydney architect George El Khouri was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia (OAM) in the 2022 Australia Day Honours for service to architecture and the community.

El Khouri is the director of George El Khouri Architects and has been a member of the Australian Institute of Architects since 1978. He is also a founding member of the Australian Architects Association.

His practice was awarded a Civic Design Award for Architecture from Sutherland Shire Council in 1995.

El Khouri has donated his architectural services to a number of community and religious organizations, including the Maronite Diocese of Australia, the Australia Federation of Islamic Council, and St George Hospital. A wing of the Bezzina Cancer Care Lodge, which he designed for St George Hospital, has been named in his honour.

Elsewhere in the honours list, urban planner Roz Hansen has been appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for service to urban planning architecture, and to educational, professional, and heritage conservation organizations.

Author and urbanist Jane Jase was also awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia for service to community through cultural and charitable organizations. Her book Places Women Make received the 2016 Bates Smart Award for Architecture in Media (national award).
