Construction kicks off on North Sydney 'integrated station development'

Construction has begun on a $1.2 billion North Sydney Victoria Cross Tower and retail precinct designed by Bates Smart.

The project is the first to be awarded through Transport for NSW’s Sydney Metro tender process as part of Sydney’s integrated station development.

The 42-storey office tower is designed to rise above North Sydney’s proposed metro station, and aims to transform North Sydney CBD into one of the most accessible business districts, with Victoria Cross one of the area’s most well-connected workplaces.

Victoria Cross will also include a retail and commercial precinct, with an expansive lobby and multipurpose community hub space, flowing into an activated retail laneway.

The building will be powered by 100 percent renewables, targeting a Platinum WELL and 6-Star Green Star rating. Outdoor balconies and green space as well as community connection spaces are designed to promote health and wellbeing.

“Our design positions the Metro station entry as the hinge between the new Victoria Cross Place and an east-west retail laneway that will link Miller Street to Denison Street, reconnecting the area’s fragmented streets and creating a new precinct,” Bates Smart said.

“The base of the office tower meshes with this area and the Metro station entry to create a precinct that will act as a new, democratic place for North Sydney.”

The tower will accommodate up to 7,000 workers across around 58,000 square metres of premium office and retail space.

Construction of the $1.2 billion precinct is expected to progress by one floor each week, with the project expected to be completed in 2024.
