Cumulus Studio designs expansion to Hobart social housing complex

The Tasmanian government is working with Housing Choices Tasmania to deliver a 65-unit expansion of the Queens Walk social housing complex site in Cornelian Bay, Hobart.

Designed by Cumulus Studio, the $24 million expansion would provide 65 additional homes for Tasmanians in need of “safe, secure and stable housing” that is close to the city, to public transport and services, said housing minister Guy Barnett.

The minister added the project would increase housing diversity in the city’s housing stock, while delivering economic benefits to the region during construction. The project is also consistent with the Greater Hobart Plan, encouraging infill developments through the Greater Hobart region.

“In optimizing the land available at Queens Walk, and leveraging our local industry and partnership with Housing Choices, we can deliver even more stable and affordable accommodation for vulnerable Tasmanians,” said Barnett.

Barnett said not-for-profit Housing Choices Tasmania had “successfully managed” the complex since 2013, creating a “strong and diverse community”.

According to the Department of Communities’ June 2022 Housing Dashboard, demand for social housing in Tasmania remains high, with indicators showing an average of an 89.9-week wait time to house priority applicants from the Housing Register.

The Queens Walk expansion would help address housing shortfalls and provide improved communal areas and updated infrastructure for local residents.
