Heritage-listed Tasmanian TAFE to be redeveloped

A heritage-listed former TAFE campus in Tasmania’s Launceston is set to be transformed into a mixed-use lifestyle facility named Reunion, in a $95 million redevelopment that seeks to increase visitation to the riverside city.

The project, designed by DKO Architecture, has received rezoning and development approval.

Proposed for the site at 10-16 Wellington Street is a five-star hotel, restaurants and cafe offerings, a brewery, distillery, large courtyard, and 14 residential dwellings comprising of one-two, three and four bedroom apartments with a communal lounge area, containing a formal dining, library, workspace, and bar.

Tasmanian developer Red Panda Property Group said the vision for the project is to make Launceston more attractive to Tasmanians and tourists by activating the area further through the addition of new dining and beverage options.

Wellington Street is located within close proximity to Royal Park and the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery. The project proposes easily accessible pedestrian and bicycle linkages to these sites.

Senior associate and architect at DKO, Dominic Gaetani said the project is of personal significance to him. “Having grown up in the area, this project is of personal importance to me and the care our team have taken to deliver a significant proect that will add to the local community is evident,” Gaetini said.

Seventeen hotel operators have been shortlisted for the management of the hotel, with an announcement to be made in the upcoming months.

Construction is anticipated to commence in mid-2024.
