The Australian Institute of Architects has announced the jury for the 2023 National Architecture Awards.
The five-member panel comprises the Institute’s national president, Shannon Battisson (chair); architects Shaneen Fantin, William Smart and Stephanie Kitingan; and builder Scott Burchell.
“As a jury, we are thrilled to come together to witness work across the country and celebrate the achievements of our peers bringing work to fruition that is considered, sensitive to its place and context, and generous to those who move within and around its built form,” said Battisson.
“We look forward to sharing an inspiring array of projects, from the most humble enclosure to the larger-scaled public projects, with everyone in the coming months.”
The jurors come from diverse backgrounds and bring unique perspectives to the judging process.
Shaneen Fantin is director of Cairns-based People Oriented Design (POD) and has more than 25 years of experience in community, health and housing projects across Australia and the Pacific. She is also a supporter of sustainable and inclusive design.
William Smart is founder and creative director of Smart Design Studio in Sydney, which has a wide-ranging portfolio of projects from large-scale masterplanning to private houses and product designs. Smart’s holistic approach combines both architectural and interior design.
Stephanie Kitingan is director of Placement, an emerging architecture practice based in Melbourne. The practice’s residential projects have been featured in several publications and awards. She is also a juror for the 2023 Victorian Architecture Awards.
Scott Burchell is director of Comb Construction, a residential builder that specializes in complex architectural builds. He has worked with a number of architects and designers across Australia.
The national jury will begin its tour in mid-July, visiting projects across the country until early August. The winners of the National Architecture Awards will be announced on 31 October in Canberra at the conclusion of the Australian Architecture Conference.
