The City of Melbourne has appointed ten new members to its Melbourne Design Review Panel.
First introduced in October 2021 as a 12-month pilot program, the Melbourne Design Review Panel was made permanent in March 2023.
The panel provides independent design advice to both council and applicants of prominent design proposals, and champions design excellence and innovation across the built environment of the city.
The new members appointed to the 16-member panel are: professor Donald Bates (University of Melbourne), Minnie Cade (Wardle), Julian Kosloff (Kosloff Architecture), Ann Lau (Hayball), James Legge (Six Degrees Architects), Matthew Mackay (Aspect Studios), Jeremy McLeod (Breathe Architecture), Marika Neustupny (NMBW), Alison Potter (Hassell), Craig Tan (Craig Tan Architects.
“Some of Melbourne’s best and most awarded designers have joined our Design Review Panel and will help to uphold Melbourne’s leading architecture and design identity,” said lord mayor Sally Capp.
“Over the past two years, the panel has made a significant impact on $500 million worth of projects – shaping and refining high quality, innovative design that celebrates heritage and contemporary living.”
Deputy lord mayor Nicholas Reece added, “In a world where too many cities are starting to look the same, and too many bland and low grade buildings are being built, the role of the Design Review Panel has never been more important.”
“Melbourne has a distinct design identity that is highly valued and must be preserved. The panel has really proven its value by ensuring major projects use materials and concepts that represent our city and tell a story about Melbourne.”
